Mott Street Optical

Mott x Bayard St. James Frame

Mott Street Optical is a multigenerational family-owned optical shop serving the Chinatown community for over 25 years. As the flagship store of Mott Optical Group, it carries a wide selection of Asian-fit eyewear, from high-end designer frames to budget-friendly in-house brands.

Kaleena and Kenneth Ma are the second-generation owners of the Mott Optical Group. Their family owns six optical shops in NYC (three in Manhattan, two in Queens, and one in Brooklyn). Their father started the business back in the 1980s as a new immigrant. He chose to pursue opticianry at City Tech as he enjoyed talking to and helping people. At that time, he felt there weren’t many optical shops catered to Asian features and higher prescriptions.

Inspired by her father, Kaleena followed in his footsteps in the industry. Her brother, Kenneth, is also involved in the family business. After graduating from business school, he started to manage the optical group’s finances and marketing. He also built an in-house brand, Mott and Bayard Eyewear, after the intersection that Mott Street Optical is on. Their exclusive frame designs are stylish, affordable, and made for Asian faces.

The Ma family believes in honoring their roots by supporting and contributing to the Chinese and immigrant communities in New York City. They regularly host free eye screenings in local schools. They also collect and donate used glasses to New Eyes for the Needy.
