Alimama
Alimama opened on February 17th, 2018. Known for its trendy treats and fruity drinks, it was also the first shop in New York City to offer Japanese mochi donuts.
Janie Wang, a Lower East Side native, was inspired to open the cafe due to her gluten intolerance. Thus, most of the items on the menu are either gluten-free, vegetarian, or vegan. Her parents owned restaurants when she was growing up, but she was inspired to serve something new and exciting in her humble cafe. Having first tried mochi donuts on a trip to Taiwan and finding herself surprised by the donut's unique texture, she wanted to introduce New Yorkers to the sweet and chewy treat.
In addition, Alimama is an environmentally conscious cafe. They use paper utensils and straws, as well as compostable packaging. Although it is expensive, Janie believes that it is worth it since she has the ability to control what is wasted.
Some of our favorite items at Alimama include the boba milk tea cream puff, strawberry mochi donut, and lychee rose drink. Go give ‘em a try and let us know what you think.
