Fong On
As NYC’s oldest family-run tofu shop, Fong On has been selling handmade tofu and sweet rice cakes since 1933. Formerly known as Fong In Too, the beloved neighborhood mainstay briefly closed in 2017 due to rising rent and falling demand. It reopened in 2018 under the leadership of Paul Eng and his wife, Marina. As a professional photographer, Paul had no idea how to make tofu and rice cakes when he took over the family business. He perfected the family recipes through trial and error and even created innovative rice cake flavors like ginger and matcha!
Chloe used to go to their old location on 46 Mott Street every Saturday with her family. Their weekly shopping list consisted of steamed rice rolls, pan-fried turnip cakes, and a piping hot container of tofu pudding with ginger syrup.
She was feeling adventurous today and decided to get the savory tofu pudding! It was her first time trying it and the silky tofu contrasted nicely with crunchy toppings like dried shrimp and pickled radish.
Tip: Ask for sriracha on the side if you can’t eat spicy like us!
