Kalye
Kayle, meaning 'street' in Tagalog, is a Filipino cafe that offers delectable dishes that reflect the local food scene in Manila. After roaming around empty streets in the thick of the pandemic, Rob and his partner Henry opened Kalye to highlight Filipino culture and help bring vibrant energy back to New York City.
Their best-sellers are the Ube Waffle, Ube Pork Sliders, and the Inasal Chicken Wings. The wings are marinated in lemon grass, lemon, vinegar, and other spices from the Philippines. If you ask the Kalye staff - their favorites are the Empanadas and the Pork Siopao (steamed buns)!
The aspect of "community" is essential to Kalye's mission. The restaurant's location on Broome street was intentionally selected in an area of immigrants and to be a "tambayan," which translates to "a place for friends to hang out." Rob & Henry want customers to feel a sense of connection while eating the food and being surrounded by art displayed by local artists.
Don't forget to try the Ube Flan and Sans Rival, desserts inspired by Rob's mom's recipes and as sweet as Rob & Henry's love story.
