K.K. Discount Store

Porcelain Rice Bowl

K.K. Discount Store is known as the mom-and-pop version of Target in Chinatown. In 1978, Ken Li and his wife immigrated from Hong Kong with only a few dollars in their pocket. They came to America to give their kids a better life than they had back home. Working 12-15 hours a day, the couple finally saved enough money to open their own business in 1990.

Inside the packed store, you can find anything your heart desires. They stock everything from carbon steel woks and rice cookers to shopping carts and mahjong sets! General stores like KK are essential to the Chinatown community. They provide culturally relevant goods at a low price to vulnerable elderly residents who often face language and financial barriers at other mainstream stores.

Make sure to stop by KK Discount Store for your everyday needs. If you’re lucky enough, you might even run into Mr. and Mrs. Li’s adorable granddaughter (IG: @littlemisschinatown).
