Sanmiwago

Panfried Pork & Chive Gyozas with Homemade Chili Oil

Mr. Lee opened Sanmiwago in January 2022. He is originally from Taiwan and came to the U.S. in July 2020. Before opening his business, he co-founded a famous dumpling franchise that has over 200 locations in Taiwan. He stumbled upon this business opportunity at Mott Street Eatery while grocery shopping in Chinatown. Since the initial investment was minimal, he immediately took up the opportunity and started selling his homemade dumplings.

A man of many hats, Mr. Lee was a political activist, former science teacher, and talented oil painter. He used his various skills to contribute to the success of Sanmiwago. Mr.Lee hand-painted their store’s logo, featuring three dogs lovingly called the Dumpling Dogs. He also used the science of cooking to craft delicious and fragrant dumplings. Sanmiwago is particularly famous for its pan-fried gyoza dumplings with meat-filled to the brim. Their dumplings can also be purchased frozen and last for up to half a year. Make sure to ask for their homemade chili sauce, the perfect accompaniment for their dumplings.

As a new immigrant and business owner, Mr. Lee faced numerous challenges, including language barriers and low foot traffic to his stall during the pandemic. Nonetheless, he believes in his high-quality dumplings. He hopes to expand the business and open more locations in the U.S.

Sanmiwago means “What is this?” in Taiwanese, a name designed to spark curiosity. He also chose the name as it sounds like San Diego in English! If your interest is piqued, stop by and visit Mr. Lee and their three children (who help out in the store) at Mott Street Eatery!
