Pvt. Danny Chen, a Manhattan Chinatown son was a 19-year-old American soldier found dead in Afghanistan on October 3, 2011, after weeks of racial maltreatment and hazing by his superiors. The community in Chinatown rallied for justice for Danny, signing thousands of petitions and participating in rallies and marches calling for a fair and thorough investigation. Community members went to D.C. and the Pentagon to meet with elected leaders and military officials and attended multiple court-martials in North Carolina. Eight superiors were subsequently convicted in connection with Danny's death and removed from the Army. Danny's family is grateful to the community for their support during this ordeal. On the 10th anniversary of their son's death, they want now to help Manhattan's Chinatown which is struggling economically with the Covid-19 fallout. This spirited tour will go to 9 stops in Chinatown with narration and/or performances at each stop. All the stops are outside, except at one stop, you have the option of going inside to see amazing, historical photos of Chinatown on the second floor. There is no elevator and you must wear a mask if you go inside. We estimate the tour will take an hour and a half ending at the corner of Canal and Elizabeth Streets for a short 1/2 hour official commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of Private Danny Chen's death.
