Yi Ji Shi Mo Noodle Corp

Steamed Rice Rolls with Curry Fish Balls

Known for their made-to-order stone mill rice rolls, Yi Ji Shi Mo Noodle Corp opened in March 2019. Windy Wu, the manager, is originally from Kaiping, China. She was inspired to open the shop after seeing the long lines of people waiting for rice rolls from the food carts.

Stone mill rice rolls are popular street food in Guangdong, China. They are known as sek mo cheung fun (in Cantonese) or shi mo chang fen (in Mandarin). Over the past few years, Manhattan's Chinatown has seen a boom of this iconic Cantonese dish. It's not hard to find fresh rice rolls in dim sum parlors, bakeries, grocery stores, street carts, and even dedicated rice roll shops.

Every morning, a worker grinds the rice with their in-house stone mill to create a milky white mixture. After customers place their orders, the cook carefully ladles the rice milk into a steamer to transform the liquid into thin layers of translucent rice rolls stuffed with various meats and vegetables.

In addition to their signature rice rolls, you can also get soy milk, tea eggs, congee, and even black sesame soup at the tiny shop. I tried the rice rolls with curry fish balls today, but honestly, everything on their menu is tasty and super affordable!
